IPAL team 1st runner-up to the grand-prize of SG’s 1st IoT Hackathon

28 Apr 2015

Their team “The Butlers” was competing in the geriatrics category of the IoT and wearables hackathon organized by A*STAR I²R and ETPL, and SIAA. They came in first runner-up to the grand prize with their connected equipment for HDB fitness courts.

The 2-day hackathon took place in BASH (Building Amazing Startups Here), a startup facility located at the Launchpad@one-north. Ten teams competed in three categories : wellness, construction and geriatrics.
The Butlers thought of connecting HDB fitness corners to the cloud, offering social incentives for elderly to stay physically active. They presented a connected air stepper that counts steps and sends the data directly to the cloud. A user interface, accessed by swiping an EZ-link senior citizen card, displays the real time step count, as well as performance rewards. An SMS integration allows the user to send text messages to neighbours, inviting them to join and exercise together. The Butlers also integrated gamification, allowing for inter-block or family contests.
They received a $2000 prize with the first runner-up position, coming in second only to a team competing in the wellness category with a smart shoe sole prototype that tracks the walker/runner pressure map to correct posture.
